Answers to common questions, and how to reach us.
Something not working, or an idea for the app?
Write to us. We usually reply within a few days.
It helps if you tell us your device, its system version, and what you did just before the problem.
Adding songs
Which songs can I add?
Two kinds: MP3 files from the Files app (or Finder on Mac), and songs stored on your device in your music library, such as songs you bought or synced from a computer.
Each song can be up to 50 MB.
Why can't I add a song from Apple Music?
Songs streamed or downloaded from Apple Music are copy-protected, so no app can read their audio to separate it. Only songs you own and that are stored on your device can be added.
The app says it can't access my music library
You may have declined the permission the first time. Open Settings › Apps › I am a band and turn on Media & Apple Music. On Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Media & Apple Music.
Separating
How long does separating take?
Usually a few minutes for a song, depending on its length and your device. It all happens on your device, so it works without an internet connection.
You can leave the app while it works. If you add several songs, they wait their turn and are separated one after the other.
A song couldn't be separated
Tap Retry on the song. If it fails again, the file may be damaged or in a format the app can't read. Try another copy of the song, and write to us if it keeps happening.
I can still hear a bit of the voice in the other tracks
Separation is very good but not perfect, especially on dense mixes, live recordings and heavy effects. A little of one instrument can bleed into another track. It's normal.
Playing and recording
How do I change the key or the speed?
Use the Key and Speed controls in the player. Key moves the song up or down in semitones without changing its speed. Speed slows it down or speeds it up without changing its key.
My recording also has the music in it
Put on headphones before you record. Without them, the microphone picks up the music from the speaker.
My recording is a little early or late
Every microphone and pair of headphones adds a small delay. After recording, use Sync to move your take earlier or later until it lines up with the band.
The app can't use the microphone
Open Settings › Apps › I am a band and turn on Microphone. On Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and turn on I am a band.
Lyrics
The lyrics don't show up
The first time you use a language, your device downloads Apple's speech recognition for it, so connect to the internet once. After that, lyrics work offline.
Lyrics need a device that supports Apple's on-device speech recognition, and a language it supports. If the song has no clear voice, there may be no lyrics to show.
The lyrics are in the wrong language
Choose the right one with Lyrics language in the player, and the app writes them out again.
Exporting
How do I save or share a song?
Open the song and choose Export. Pick “The mix” for one file that sounds just as you hear it, or “The tracks” for one file per track, at the key and speed you chose. Then choose M4A for smaller files or WAV for full quality, and share or save the result.
Your data
Where are my songs stored?
Only on your device, inside the app. Nothing is uploaded. Deleting a song deletes its tracks, your recording and its lyrics. See the privacy policy for details.
